Time is Running Out for Ending Horse Slaughter this Congress
For this post I will start with a bit of an outline on Congress and schedules. As you know, we are working hard on the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act currently pending before the 116th Congress. Each Congress is two years long and is broken down into two yearlong sessions. We are currently winding down on the second session of the 116th Congress which will end in December 2020. At the end of every Congress all legislation introduced over the previous two years dies and must be reintroduced from scratch in the new Congress when it begins in January. Then we start the whole process over again while more horses suffer.
So, you are thinking, that means we still have three and a half months to get this bill done by the end of December. Sadly, the reality is much less. Remember, Congress isn’t in session every day of the week or even every week of the month. We are heading into a presidential election on November 3, so many in Congress, running for their own reelection, want to spend time in their districts and not Washington, DC. Now add on top that we are in the middle of an ongoing pandemic which has changed all our lives. This is no normal legislative season in Washington, DC.
In reality we, are looking at a few work weeks at the most left in this legislative session to end horse slaughter.
I wrote this to motivate horse lovers across the US. We aren’t fighting for another government contract; we are fighting for the horses being slaughtered. Every day Congress fails to act on this straightforward, bipartisan bill to end horse slaughter, American horses are being slaughtered for human consumption. Yes, the window on the 116th Congress is closing, but that doesn’t mean we can’t end horse slaughter by passing the SAFE Act before the end of the year, but it takes everyone stepping up to help.
There is still time, but we need your help and the help of everyone you know. Please visit our website to send an email to your legislators in support of the SAFE Act, but once you are done be sure to take our other actions along with sharing the web page with everyone you know. Together we can end the slaughter of American horses.
