The House Committee hearing on the SAFE Act is Thursday, May 26th. Now's the time to address the crazy falsehoods in the public about brutal Horse Slaughter
The House Committee hearing on the SAFE Act is this Thursday, May 26th , and there’s a positive chance it will pass. Because of this, we have seen the term “unwanted horse” being thrown around again. We want to address the myth of the “Unwanted Horse”
It is my hope to educate and inform the public on a question “Where will all the “unwanted horses”.
The term “unwanted horse” was created by the pro slaughter industry. Horse slaughter is a demand driven business, every week Kill buyers look to meet a quota to fill their trucks to ship to slaughter!
Slaughter is NOT a necessary evil as suggested by many and is far from humane euthanasia! Horse slaughter is one of the most horrific practices ever for ending a horses life for many reasons you will hear below!
FACTS:
The numbers of horses shipped to slaughter has significantly dropped due to public awareness and education of this brutal practice thanks to organizations like Horses in Our Hands.
The number of horses slaughtered was as high as 450,000 in the 1990s and is down to less 35,000 in 2021. This year it is at 26,000, a 75% drop in the last four years! This number makes up for less than .05% of the entire US horse population and can easily be reabsorbed into good homes!
The demand for horse meat has also decreased and some European countries are actually now banning imported horse meat. These numbers will continue to decrease.
There are many ways we can continue to help which include limiting overbreeding by breeders and forcing registration on breeding programs.
We can also create a safety net for subsidized euthanasia, and continue to expand adoption and rescue networks.
NO the answer is NOT bringing horse slaughter back to the USA. The answer is awareness and education, regulation and humane euthanasia and doing the RIGHT thing!
There are more than 700 horse rescue organizations across the country, with new ones forming every week.
It is our responsibility as pet owners to do what is RIGHT and humane.
MORE FACTS:
Horses are shoved in to packed cattle trucks for a 2-3 day trip to Mexico and Canada for with no food or water.
Being flight animals and terrified, they kick and bite trying to escape often arriving with broken legs and injured eyes. They are beaten and whipped as they are shoved in and out of trailers many not even making it alive to the slaughter plants!
Then they are given a botched captive shot to the head that’s not designed for horses, due to their intense “fight or flight” response. Their long necks toss when frightened.
Their brains are also farther back in their skulls than cattle, making the target zone for stunning impossible. As a result, horses often endure repeated blows or are given a machete to the spine to stop them moving while suffering before being dismembered alive! NO animal deserves this!!
The organizations leading the charge like us to ban horse slaughter are the same organizations actively working to provide humane solutions for horses!!
Now is the time to END this once and for all!
